Louisiana Lottery Corporation (LLC) has generated LA Lottery winning numbers since it was established in 1991 after the state’s legislature proposed a state lottery to generate revenue without increasing taxes. Voters passed a constitutional amendment creating the LLC, by a margin of 69 percent to 31 percent.
To play the lottery’s draw-style games, which include Pick 3, Pick 4, Easy 5, and lotto, players choose their own numbers or allow the lottery’s computers to pick their numbers, and they wait for a draw to be held to find out if they win. Louisiana Lottery has also participated in the multistate draw-style game of Powerball since March 1995.
People can check la lottery winning numbers on the lottery’s Web site, at retailers, on nightly broadcasts of participating TV stations, or by calling the lottery’s toll-free winning numbers hotline. Winning numbers can be printed from retailer ticket terminals. After draws are conducted, the official winning numbers generated by the system are transmitted to Louisiana Public Broadcasting for satellite relay to the participating TV stations. LA Lottery winning numbers are also faxed to state and local news media. The lottery posts the winning numbers on its Web site following the draws each night, after verifying the winning data.
Lotto was the first draw-style game of the Louisiana Lottery, beginning in January 1992. It offers a cash jackpot that starts at 250 thousand dollars and grows until it is won. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 3.8 million for matching all six of the LA Lottery winning numbers. The six numbers that players can pick are from 1 to 40. The jackpot, match-5, and match-4 prizes are pari-mutuel, so the prize pool for each of these three prize levels is split between all winning tickets for a draw.
More than 190 jackpot-winning tickets for the lotto game have been sold since it began. The largest jackpot with only one winning ticket was over 21 million dollars on September 26, 1992. The largest lotto jackpot where more than one ticket had the LA Lottery winning numbers was 31 million dollars on January 9, 1993. It was split between two winners, who each received 15.5 million dollars, paid as annuities. The largest lump-sum prize was 15.6 million dollars on June 1, 1996.
Lotto accounts for about 16 percent of all LA Lottery sales. In 2010, lotto was the fourth most popular draw-style game after Powerball, Pick 3, and Pick 4. The average advertised lotto jackpot won in 2010 was over 500 thousand dollars and was hit eleven times.
