Do you realize that you have better chances of being in a car or plane accident or being struck by lightning compared to your chances of winning the lottery on any given day? Despite the tremendous odds, many people in the United States believe that winning the lottery is the only way of becoming financially secure in life.
Calculating one’s chances of winning the lottery involves a number of factors. How many numbers do you have to choose for the lottery? This is the number of balls that are drawn for the lottery. What is the lowest number that you can pick? What is the highest number that you can pick?
A calculation for chances of winning the lottery may often assume that only one of each number in the range of possible numbers will appear in winning numbers for that lottery. This means that a given number may only appear once in the winning number combination; plenty of lotteries work this way.
Other factors that may be involved are whether the order of the numbers is significant and whether the numbers already drawn are returned for a further draw. As you can see, your chances of winning the lottery will vary widely depending on the lottery design.
In 6/49 lotteries, for instance, you choose six numbers from 1 to 49 with no duplicates allowed. If all six of the numbers you choose match those that came up in the official draw, then you are a jackpot winner. The order of the six numbers drawn does not matter. Lotteries in the United States with 6/49 games, like the Pennsylvania Lottery, post their odds for the games on their respective Web sites, but the odds for 6/49 games in general are said to be 1 in 13,983,816.
Mega Millions, which is a popular multistate lottery game in the United States, also lets players choose six numbers, but two distinct sets of numbers are used. For the first five numbers, the set used is from 1 to 56. The sixth number, which is called the Mega Ball number, is from 1 to 46. This design makes Mega Millions very difficult to win, with chances of winning the lottery at 1 in 195,711,536. However, players do get a very small payout even if they match only the Mega Ball number.
Possibly the most difficult lottery to win is the Super Enalotto in Italy. Players have to match six numbers out of 90, making the chances of winning the lottery jackpot 1 in 622,614,630.
